Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy describes how oldcenturyprison.com ("we", "our", "us") handles information when you use the website (the "Service"). The Service is a non-commercial, independent, educational record of Irish historical prisons. We process the minimum information necessary to operate the Service.
1. Data Controller
The data controller for the purposes of this Policy is the publisher of oldcenturyprison.com, based at 27 Belvidere Place, Dublin 1, D01 X9R5, Ireland. Contact: editor@oldcenturyprison.com.
2. Categories of Data Collected
Because the Service contains no input forms, no account registration, no comments, and no e-commerce, we do not collect names, addresses, telephone numbers, payment information, or government identifiers from Users. We may process the following limited categories:
- Technical access data — IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, and pages visited, as recorded in standard web-server logs;
- Cookie preferences — your choices in our cookie consent banner, stored in your browser's localStorage as described in our Cookie Policy;
- Aggregate analytics — only if you explicitly opt-in via the cookie banner; otherwise no analytics are collected.
3. Purposes of Processing & Legal Basis
| Purpose | Legal basis |
|---|---|
| Operating and securing the Service (server logs) | Legitimate interest |
| Storing your cookie preferences | Consent (CCPA / GDPR) |
| Aggregate analytics (if opted-in) | Consent |
| Responding to your email enquiries | Legitimate interest |
4. Third-Party Sharing
We do not sell or rent personal information. The following service providers process limited data on our behalf:
- Hosting provider — receives standard server-log data to deliver the website;
- Google Fonts (fonts.googleapis.com) — serves the typefaces Fraunces and Karla; receives your IP address and User-Agent string when fonts are loaded;
- Google Maps (when you click an address) — links to maps.google.com open in a new tab; once you click, Google's own privacy policy applies.
If, in the future, we add an analytics provider or any other third party, we will update this Policy and the Cookie Policy accordingly.
5. International Data Transfers
The Service is hosted on infrastructure that may transfer data internationally, including to the United States. Where such transfers occur, they are governed by the standard contractual clauses adopted by the European Commission and applicable equivalents.
6. Retention Periods
- Web-server access logs — retained for up to 30 days, then deleted;
- Cookie preferences — stored in your browser's localStorage until you clear them or change your selection;
- Email correspondence — retained for as long as necessary to address your enquiry, and not longer than 12 months thereafter unless required by law.
7. Your CCPA Rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), grants you the following rights with respect to your personal information:
- Right to Know — what personal information we have collected, the categories of sources, and the purposes of collection;
- Right to Delete — request deletion of personal information we have collected;
- Right to Correct — request correction of inaccurate personal information;
- Right to Opt-Out of Sale or Sharing — we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising; the opt-out right is therefore preserved by default;
- Right to Limit Use of Sensitive Personal Information — we do not collect sensitive personal information as defined by the CPRA;
- Right to Non-Discrimination — we will not discriminate against you for exercising any of the rights above.
To exercise any of these rights, contact editor@oldcenturyprison.com. We will respond within 45 days as required by the CCPA.
8. Children's Data
The Service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13. If we learn that we have collected information from a child under 13, we will delete it promptly. Parents or guardians who become aware of such collection should contact us at the address above.
9. Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information
We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioural advertising. As such, no opt-out is required. This statement is provided in compliance with CCPA disclosure requirements.
10. Security Measures
We use industry-standard technical and organisational measures, including HTTPS encryption in transit, restricted access to server logs, and prompt patching of underlying software. No method of transmission over the internet is fully secure, however, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
11. Changes to this Policy
We may revise this Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in an updated Effective Date and version number at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service following the posting of a revised Policy constitutes acceptance of the revisions.
